Canine osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common disorders in dogs that cause pain and impair quality of life. OA can develop at any age in dogs due to various factors, such as obesity or other orthopedic conditions. Nowadays, NSAIDs are used to be the main drugs for the treatment of OA. The drugs have had side effects on the gastrointestinal and renal systems, especially when used for a long term in geriatric patients. Therefore, alternative drugs still need to be used to manage OA pain due to their fewer side effects.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that has gained more popularity recently. CBD has been reported to have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory activities. Thus, it can be a good alternative source to use for developing a drug.

We developed CBD cookie products with an appearance, taste, and CBD content suitable for canines. This product was tested on dogs with stage 2 osteoarthritis pain, and significant improvements in pain scores were observed in the group that received cookies mixed with CBD extract. And the result showed no adverse effects. (manuscript in preparation).
