Green Extraction Technology

Clean & Green Chemistry

The first and most important stage in the isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds from plant sources is extraction. Therefore, green extraction technology refers to ways of separating valuable substances from plant materials that are both ecologically benign and sustainable. This includes cannabinoids like THC and CBD, as well as terpenes and other helpful components in cannabis and hemp. In previous times, conventional extraction procedures usually used solvents such as butane or hexane, which may be dangerous to both the environment and human health if not handled appropriately.

Green extractions have not only a lower environmental effect but may also provide higher-quality extracts. Moreover, green extraction technologies can be more cost-effective in the long run as it may not require the purchase and disposal of hazardous solvents. Under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Sornkanok Vimolmangkang, she was inspired by the sustainability of green extraction technologies. So, that’s why she decided to apply green cannabis extraction technologies, including hydro-distillation, subcritical water, supercritical fluid, microwave-assisted, and solventless extractions to produce and get crude extracts and components with high quality. And then all those extracts are used to devise prototypes and products of the Leapdelab company that are safe and without solvent residues that can harm the health of people.
